AP Studio Gets Monstrous with Force of Extinction TTRPG
A new high-production studio led by tech entrepreneurs and Hollywood actors is aiming to make the next big post-apocalyptic TTRPG.

12-Sided Studios
A new studio in the actual play space is trying to make a kaiju-sized impression with their post-apocalyptic TTRPG.
Force of Extinction is 12-Sided Studios’ first TTRPG that it has written and crowd-funded. The game presents itself as both easy to learn and extremely violent. It focuses on an alternate history of Earth where the “Evopocalypse” occurred, causing cities to become overgrown with wildlife and animals to grow into colossal, almost Kaiju-like creatures. Players are survivors, the remaining humans seeking to survive on this planet and learn what truly happened.

The game is designed to be picked up quickly and learned in under 30 minutes, according to its designers Edward Spence, Chad Pytel and Jasper William Cartwright. The game relies on an under-20 dice system. It comes with tools for building communities and monsters in the dark setting it’s based on. It’s also notably lethal but strives to make it easier for characters to jump back in whenever possible. It’s a game where players have to risk being the hero, or just monster chow.
While the game is currently in crowdfunding, it was previewed early in 2025 when the award-winning AP Transplanar decided to use the FoE ruleset for Arc 4 of the Chaos Protocol, their ongoing show. It’s also had a presence at conventions for years, where it’s generated notable hype among fans.

12-Sided Studios’ Expansive Approach to AP

12-Sided Studios is a “UK-based production studio founded by passionate gamers and performers who believe it's possible to create high-quality fantasy, sci-fi & nerdy content that’s representative and fair to all who play and produce,” according to their website. It’s led by:
Jasper William Cartwright, an actor and producer with a history in Hollywood as well as a lengthy history in the Actual Play space. He founded the award-winning 3 Black Halflings podcast and has appeared on Critical Role, Dimension 20 and other shows.
Chad Pitel is a podcast host, business owner, and founder. He originally founded the web and mobile design agency thoughtbot but has spent years of his life playing D&D and other TTRPGs.
Jess Jewel is a producer from 3 Black Halflings and has been involved in a wide spectrum of AP projects, including the UK-based live D&D show Questing Time.
12-Sided was originally founded in 2024 as a studio designed to help companies produce their own APs to promote products. They produced Thresher, a two-part series on Critical Role’s Beacon in 2025, followed by a one-shot promoting Brotherwise Games’ Cosmere TTRPG. The studio itself is based out of the UK.
What’s made 12-Sided’s approach to AP stand out is its technical approach, using visual elements and environmental changes on a set stage to help emulate the story as it unfolds. It’s a method that has increased immersion, Cartwright and Pitel told TTRPG Insider, but is limited to recorded content due to the extensive post-production work and customization involved.
The company is still seeking partners and is currently focused on Force of Extinction.
