Dark Sun, World of Warcraft, Beyond: Everything Unveiled at D&D Vision Keynote
Here's everything you need to know from D&D's plans for 2027, as they were unveiled at GenCon 2026
Dark Sun, World of Warcraft, and a wide spectrum of new partnerships were at the center of Dungeons & Dragons’ upcoming plans for 2026 and 2027.
The company hosted its Vision Keynote on Thursday, where D&D Head Dan Ayoub and several other team members detailed their vision for where the popular fantasy TTRPG is heading next. These will feature a return to long-desired settings, partnerships with established IPs, and coordinating with other creators in the space.

Season of Champions: D&D in Azeroth

The long-rumored D&D adaptation of the popular massive multiplayer roleplaying game is confirmed; the D&D team is off to Azeroth in the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion.
The book will hold all playable ancestries, from Draenei to Dracthyr to the most recent Haranir. It will also provide guidance and tools for adapting D&D classes to match the style of Azeroth while also adding 9 new subclasses. The vision, as expressed to the press by James Wyatt, is to allow players to play as their favorite specs from traditional Azeroth.
There will also be lore from all of the settings, NPCs, monsters, and much more as players get the chance to explore the history of Azeroth as they see fit.

Wizards of the Coast
“World of Warcraft and Dungeons & Dragons are both built on a powerful idea: give players a world full of possibility, then let them make the story their own,” Holly Longdale, Executive Producer and Vice President, World of Warcraft at Blizzard Entertainment said in a press statement. “Azeroth has always meant something different to everyone who steps into it, whether it’s built upon the heroes they become, the friends they find, or the choices they make along the way. Bringing World of Warcraft to the D&D table is a chance for players to carry that spirit forward in a whole new way: your character, your party, your story.”
The game is the first in what D&D’s Laura Hohmann described as the D&D Universes Beyond, a new initiative where D&D will work with teams at other third-party IPs to publish new content based on settings.
The settings will be “hand-picked collaborations” and offer “authentic loveletters” to fans of franchises, Hohmann emphasized. No additional details were disclosed about future collaborations, but it seems quite clear that D&D is adopting a similar approach to Magic: The Gathering, which has seen enormous sales and success due to card sets built on popular IPs.
D&D: World of Warcraft releases on November 17, 2026 after the Season of Magic ends in Q3 2026.

Season of Survival: A Return to Dark Sun

The next big season to start 2027 off with a bang will be Dark Sun, a mature setting based on the original content from OSR-ran D&D in 1991, and has been a long-running request from D&D fans as well as a highly risky one due to the adult content involved.
The book will have a “mature focus” that will differ from the adventuring of the payer. “This isn’t the world you save, it’s the world you survive,” according to the product’s description.
It’s arguably the biggest launch for D&D 5.5e to date with three books and a wide spectrum of accessories. Players will get access to the player-focused expansion Blood and Power, the setting-focused Edge of Oblivion, and a specialized version of the PHB for the setting. This will total 500 pages in content, and include multiple subclasses and the Psion, a new class that was previewed in 2025 through Unearthed Arcana.
The Dark Sun books are expected to release in Q1 or Q2 of 2027.
Season of Sword and Sorcery: Greyhawk

Drelzna
The next season will return to Gary Gygax’s Greyhawk after multiple years. While the setting was established as the core of D&D’s identity, it will be returned to in 2027 with the release of Crown of the Witch Queen, a full campaign set there and focused on conflict with Drelzna, the daughter of Iggwilv aka Tasha.
Season of Rebellion: Star Wars?!?!
The Season of Rebellion, which is expected to release during the second half of 2027, was confirmed to be a collaboration focused on Star Wars. No details were revealed, but I’ll admit it wasn't a collaboration I anticipated being announced as part of Universes Beyond.
More details are coming.
Partnering with Third Party Studios to Expand Established Lore
D&D is also launching a new partnership program that will have established studios in the D&D space create expansions and volumes that add to the lore of fan-favorite segments:
Ghostfire Gaming (Drakkenheim, Grim Hollow) will publish a new Ravenloft supplement
Visionary Production and Design will create new material about Keith Baker’s Eberron with a focus on the Lord of Blades
Kobold Press (Tales of the Valiant, Northlands) will take over and produce a new book based on the Forgotten Realms
The expansion reflects D&D’s further embrace of third-party creators, allowing them to continue to make content to support their games.
Dungeons and Dragons: Icons
This is a new program that hopes to help “legendary D&D creatives” expand classic fantasy settings. The project will be led by Joe Manganiello, who has joined the D&D team as the chief creative officer of D&D Icons.
The project will involve a few upcoming projects, including
Dragonlance authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman writing a new TTRPG book for the fantasy setting.
Luke Gygax converting never-before-seen material from his father Gary into a new Greyhawk book.
RA Salvatore bringing Drizz Do’urden back to the D&D setting.
Tasha Featured in Upcoming Warlock Video Game

Wizards of the Coast
The upcoming Warlock video game has been core to D&D’s video game plans despite recent cancellations. The team announced that Maggie Robertson (Orin in Baldur’s Gate 3, Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil 8 ) will be voicing the witch Tasha, who will also be the patron of the game’s protagonist.
D&D Beyond: Helping to Connect Players
D&D’s team said they want to take a bigger initiative on helping connect players with possible tables through new digital tools and assets.
D&D Beyond will add a new Looking for Group feature to the website. This tool will feature free listings on the D&D Discord server, paid games on StartPlaying.games and offline listings at events and stores.
The app also hopes to update its mobile experience to help improve in-person play and make it easier to play. This new tool is expected to launch in early 2027.
