Launch Fests and Humblewoods: Son of Oak's Amit Moshe on the Future of Legend of the Mist
The man behind City of Mist and Otherscape spoke about his plans for the popular rustic fantasy TTRPG and how he sold $2M in books in a promo event.
Welcome to TTRPG Insider! This week, we got to talk to Amit Moshe, the founder of Son of Oak Games, who is best known for City of Mist, Otherscape, and a variety of other games. Their latest focus has been on Legend of the Mist, the company’s adaptation of its Mist Engine ruleset into a rustic fantasy TTRPG. The game raised enormous numbers during its initial Kickstarter campaign. Most campaigns lose momentum after then.
Not Legend in the Mist. The game has continued to sell well on DriveThruRPG and has attracted increasing attention from fans and third-party publishers. It also just wrapped up “Launch Fest”, a month-long event dedicated to celebrating the eventual physical fulfillment of the game. This included demos, streams, competitions, and additional content for the game.
As of June 16, the promotional event helped Son of Oak sell an additional ~$2 million in books on top of the original funds raised. It was, for a lack of better terms, a “followup crowdfunding event.”
Physical copies of Legend in the Mist are expected to arrive in US retail stores on July 15.
TTRPG Insider spoke with Moshe about Launch Fest, what he’s learned, and what’s next for Son of Oak.

What inspired you to host such an event like Launch Fest 1-2 years after the initial crowdfunding campaign?
Legend in the Mist has garnered a lot of attention since its Kickstarter in 2024 and then again in summer of 2025 when it was digitally released and became #1-rated game of 2025 on DriveThruRPG. But since the books are now arriving in backers' hands, in pre-orders, and soon in local stores, we wanted to throw a festival to celebrate the game and the thriving Legend In The Mist community, and to get everyone excited for the actual launch.
What has been the outcome so far?
The outcome has been truly amazing. Fans of the game can get it at almost 40% off, for the flagship bundle, a pre-order price that won't be available after the LaunchFest ends. So naturally, many people took advantage of that, some from our community and others who have just heard of the game. This total represents both the Kickstarter and the overall pre-order amounts. Honestly, we're still blown away that this game sold almost $2M in copies before even coming out in print!
The other side of it is that we have truly come together as a community. Between the live streams, the meme competition, the daily content drops, the active chats on Discord and the special events like trivia nights and play-by-post sessions – it has just been such a fun month and a half!

What led you to take this approach in comparison to other Son of Oak projects (Otherscape, City of Mist, etc.)
I think we all feel that Legend in the Mist is a special game. All of our games are special to us as creations, but there is really a rallying of the community around this one. It's something about the rustic fantasy comforting vibe and the return of a real feeling of magic that we’re all huddling around at the minute. For this reason, we really wanted to celebrate this launch.
Then again, this was so successful and showed us how much fun it is to just enjoy the new game together with the community that we will consider doing that in the future for other games.

Son of Oak
Has the success of Launch Fest affected any future plans for future projects?
Definitely. We unlocked some great new products that will be coming out later this year, such as expansions for the game's herbalism system and cultivation magic, new side quests for the main campaign of Hearts of Ravensdale, and even more tools for 5E players to easily convert their libraries into Legend in the Mist content.
Do you think other TTRPG companies could replicate Launch Fest?
I really think other TTRPG companies should adopt this. We know as indie RPG publishers how hard it is to drum up hype again one year or two years after the crowdfunding campaign. I hope we'll see more of this, as these beautiful games deserve to be launched with as much fanfare and excitement as the love that went into making them.

What’s Next? Humblewood, City of Mists 2.0, More
The big announcement that arrived as Launch Fest closed was Son of Oak’s partnership with 5e publisher Hit Point Press to adapt its award-winning setting Humblewood for Legend of the Mist.
Moshe said that it arose through conversations with Hit Point Press’ Rico Evangelho about opportunities to collaborate. “We had just concluded supporting some very successful 3rd party Kickstarters for Legend In The Mist settings like Zamanora: Ballad Of The Witch and Beyond The Woods, so Rico and I then started discussing which Hit Point Press settings we could adapt to Legend In The Mist,” Moshe told TTRPG Insider. “Naturally, the rustic fantasy vibes of LitM immediately connected with Humblewood's adorable creatures and woodland setting. We both felt that LitM could bring more story-driven depth to this already story-rich setting, and that, in turn, the LitM audience, who are crazy for anthropomorphic Heroes, would really love Humblewood. It was a natural match.”
Humblewood in the Mist will crowdfund on Kickstarter at a later date.
Son of Oak is also planning to update its urban fantasy-focused City of Mist to use the updated ruleset introduced in Legend in the Mist, while also adding support for superhero and horror games. Moshe also said he intends to complete the Hearts of Ravensdale trilogy of TTRPG campaigns some time in 2027.
