Patreon Features Top TTRPG Creators in Documentary Short

A short five minute video features ten members from the top TTRPG channels on Patreon rolling D20 in recognition of their role in its creator economy-focused system.

Patreon

The subscription-based membership platform Patreon recognized its TTRPG creators through a documentary short.

The company published The Big Roll on Tuesday, September 29, a five-minute short featuring ten individuals involved in some of the biggest TTRPG-focused memberships in the space as they roll what Patreon calls “one of the world's largest-known, fully functional 20-sided ‘D20’ die.” The dice in question were six feet by six feet in size and weighed 200 pounds.

“Creators in the tabletop role-playing game community have built a highly engaged fandom on Patreon,” said Mike McGarry, chief marketing officer at Patreon. “Every aspect of this documentary, from building a six-foot, fully functional D20 die that would actually roll down a hill, to bringing ten creators together in Los Angeles, was designed to bring joy to that community and celebrate human creativity. Patreon is passionate about giving creators’ work a life beyond the platform, which is why we love working on campaigns that bring their ideas and audiences IRL in fun, unexpected ways. It's not often that ten of the most loved creators within a subculture unite for one project, and we can't wait for fans to see what they brought to life.”

The creators featured in the video include members of the following:

  • Worlds Beyond Number (85K+ Patreon members): an improvised storytelling podcast hosted by Brennan Lee Mulligan, Erika Ishii, Aabria Iyengar, and Lou Wilson.

  • Ginny Di (17K Patreon members): A full-time creator making D&D-inspired videos, music, costumes, and offering advice for players and game masters alongside character-building tools for creatives.

  • Legends of Avantris (35K+ Patreon members): An actual play podcast with 2.8M followers on YouTube, and has run two of the more successful TTRPG crowdfunding campaigns.

  • Tales from the Stinky Dragon: A bi-weekly, actual-play D&D comedy podcast known for its silly animation and puppet antics.

  • PrintableHeroes (22K+ Patreon members): Creator of print-ready miniatures for tabletop roleplaying games

  • Amy Vorpahl: Actress, singer, writer, and gamer who has written official D&D adventures, including 2021's Candlekeep Mysteries

The creators involved were asked to perform creative challenges prior to the documentary’s filming, including Ginny Di’s various personas taking over her Patreon page and the Stinky Dragon cast riding a roller coaster after eating theme park food.

“Rolling the giant D20 down a California hill was something I never thought I’d do, and yet somehow simultaneously what I’ve been preparing for my entire life,” Vorpahl said in a press statement. “The whole event acted as a huge chimera of value: a steroid shot of enthusiasm in my Patreon audience, a moment to ask ‘what DO I want to create next,’ and a high vibes break to talk shop with other creators! Five stars. Would roll again.”

"Rolling the giant D20 was one of the first times that we really got to collaborate with a lot of other indie creators,” added Chris Demarais and Ben Ernst, who help create Tales from the Stinky Dragon. “Immediately when showing up [to the shoot], everyone was saying things like, 'We're gonna do some cool stuff, it's so great to meet you, I've been following your work for a while, I love what you do.' It had that same vibe of playing D&D together with friends."

Why This Matters

The video and Patreon’s promotional effort reflect how integral the creator-based economy is to TTRPGs as a whole.

The video was marked as a celebration of its TTRPG creators, who made $51 million in revenue in 2025 and have a total of 5.2 million subscribers.1 The platform is also often used as a regular source of secondary income for creators in the space, or for those who want access to work by veterans of the space like Ed Greenwood, Keith Baker, or Mike Mearls.

On the one hand, 5.2 million subscribers and $51 million are outstanding figures and show that there are a lot of folks who care about this space. At the same time, it is a small part of the Patreon ecosystem. The company reported 80 million users and 165 million free memberships as of April 2026.

It’s also worth noting that the majority of creators featured are D&D-adjacent creators. Worlds Beyond Number is arguably the exception, although the fame of Mulligan, Ishii, and company is due in part to their playing D&D content alongside successful acting careers.
