Preview: Exploring D&D's Universe of Magic with Arcana Unleashed and Deadfall
The latest Dungeons and Dragons expansion will expand the magical tools available at your table and explore the realm of Thay; a land that has not been visited by players in decades
TTRPG Insider got a preview of the two upcoming books from Dungeons and Dragons; Arcana Unleashed, an expansion adding an assortment of magical character options as well as Deadfall, a “magical spy thriller” built within the necromantic lands of Thay, where the Red Wizards linger.

Wizards of the Coast
Arcana Unleashed, the latest addition to D&D 5.5e, aims to make magic accessible for all classes in its approach to design.
The newest expansion for D&D 5.5e adds a variety of tools to the game for DMs and players to use at their table, lead designer Amanda Harmon said at a press briefing. She described the variety of spells, subclasses, and factions that have been added to the game in the book in hopes of offering a more fleshed-out set of tools to explore both the mechanics and culture of magic users across D&D’s multiverse.
The most notable tools are the feats, which offer new options for non-magic users to weave magical skills into their backgrounds, allowing them to gain certain features without multiclassing. For example, there are origin feats that relate to each of the eight schools of magic described in D&D. There are also options to allow players to take on a familiar for their origin feat, or to empower them so they can have combat-related features. Those could include elemental magic, healing magic, or other designs as the player levels up.

It also offers the options of magical patrons; beings of immense power who may sponsor adventurers to fulfill their goals and help them through lengthy adventures and journeys.
At the core of the book is an attempt to flesh out magic as a character, it appears. Magic is both a tool but also a force of reality that can be twisted for good or ill.
The book aims to explore those themes through the eyes of Alustriel Silverhand, Harmon noted, a legendary wizard and daughter of Mystra, the goddess of magic from the Forgotten Realms1 . She offers a hopeful exploration of how power and magic can be used and misused in its worldbuilding.
The book features eight new subclasses
Arcana Domain Cleric
Arcane Archer Fighter
Warrior of the Mystic Arts Monk
Vestige Patron Warlock
Conjurer Wizard
Enchanter Wizard
Necromancer Wizard
Transmuter Wizard
The book also holds
33 new spells
19 new creatures
9 additional factions to join or connect to
47 magical items to match all levels of play
10 backgrounds
20 feats
a single level 1 themed adventure
And a lot of worldbuilding.

Exploring The Dark Side of Magic in Thay

Wizards of the Coast
While Arcana Unleashed aims to explore the very nature of magic as presented through the eyes of the good-aligned Alustriel, Deadfall offers a look at the “dark mirror” of those same practices, according to Harmon. The long-term campaign is a “magical spy thriller” for levels 11-20, where they will operate in the region of Thay to try to stop the lich Szass Tamm from taking action to empower his undead forces and become a serious threat to the Forgotten Realms.
Deadfall was designed to offer DMs high-level play options, Harmon explained during a press briefing. Lower-level dungeons were already available through books like the previous Forgotten Realms expansions and Dragon Delves. The team wanted to offer additional high-level play options, since the last book to do so was Vecna: Eve of Ruin from 2024 (before the 5.5 update)
“It was also our opportunity to revisit a piece of canon and a story that we hadn't picked back up on in D&D for a very long time,” added Harmon. “We knew that the fans were really interested in Thay. It was fairly consistently mentioned as a place that fans were interested in.”
Harmon did confirm that the story threads described in Eve of Ruin (such as certain NPCs being imitated by others) are standalone and don’t inform other D&D books. She also noted that there are no tie-ins to D&D: Honor Among Thieves, which featured the Red Wizards of Thay and Tamm as a primary villain.
Arcana Unleashed and Deadfall will be available in retailers on September 15, 2026. Master tier subscribers will get access starting on September 1, and Hero tier on September 8.
