D&D Head Dan Ayoub to Oversee Wizards of the Coast
Dan Ayoub is taking over as president of Wizards of the Coast, overseeing D&D, Magic: The Gathering, and Hasbro's digital game properties.
We have a bit of a doubleheader for stories today, as news broke later on Tuesday about leadership changes at Wizards of the Coast. I’ll let the news speak for itself.
Dan Ayoub, the recently appointed executive that has overseen Dungeons and Dragons’ more IP-focused approach, will take over running the TTRPG’s parent company Wizards of the Coast months after its last president stepped down.

Wizards of the Coast president Dan Ayoub
Hasbro announced on Tuesday that Ayoub is taking over as president of Wizards of the Coast. The role will feature him overseeing D&D as well as Magic: The Gathering, Duel Masters, and their digital properties, such as the upcoming video game releases Exodus and Warlock.
“Dan has the passion and leadership caliber to take Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games into its next chapter,” said Chris Cocks, CEO of Hasbro in a press statement. “He understands what our games mean to the people who play them and what it takes to build great teams and experiences. His promotion reflects one of my top priorities: developing our people. I couldn't think of a better match to lead these businesses, and I'm excited for the future with him at the helm.”
“I'm honored to lead Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games, and grateful to Chris and the leadership team for this opportunity,” said Ayoub. “Magic and D&D have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and the teams behind them are among the best in the world. We'll put fans first, respect the artists and creators who bring these worlds to life, and set an ambitious course for growth across tabletop and digital. I can't wait to get started.”
Ayoub was previously the senior vice president overseeing D&D’s development and has held the role since July 2025. He served as SVP of Digital Games from 2022 until 2025. The executive has worked primarily in video games for the last 25 years, including as executive producer and studio head at 343 Industries.
His appointment comes a little over a month after former Wizards president John Hight stepped down from his leadership role in September 2026. It’s unclear if a new executive will be appointed to oversee D&D as SVP in his stead.

What Does Ayoub’s Appointment Mean?

Wizards of the Coast, Blizzard Entertainment
Ayoub is, for now, a figure many close D&D observers are somewhat familiar with. While he came from an executive background in video games, he immediately leaned into a fan-oriented approach upon his hiring. In August 2025, he told the community that he was bringing a “new dawn” to D&D’s relationship with fans through trust and third-party content creation. So far, that has included apologizing for the publisher’s handling of the 2024 OGL controversy, appointing a community advisory group to oversee D&D content, and partnering with third-party publishers to create new D&D material. He also launched its new seasons-based approach to content that allowed D&D to release new books for Ravenloft, World of Warcraft and more.
He stood at the helm of the D&D GenCon 2026 keynote, where he set a vision for multiple new releases in 2026 and 2027, including its new Universes Beyond initiative.
Ayoub’s appointment arrives around the same time that the D&D and Studio X/Magic: the Gathering teams are seeking to unionize via an NLRB vote next month. Ayoub has not signaled much about his views on unionization, although his role as an executive, alongside WOTC’s decision not to voluntarily recognize the union, does not imply high confidence beyond a simple willingness to abide by the NLRB's decision.
MTG remains a consistent revenue driver for Hasbro and WOTC, with the card game reporting its highest revenue last quarter despite multiple card set delays and product shortages over the last six months.
WOTC has remained a high priority for Cocks, who previously served as president and CEO of the organization.
It’s unclear what Ayoub’s appointment will mean for the company, although his more active role in promoting its physical products alongside its digital ones seems to reflect a shift from his predecessor, who seemed fixated on promoting WOTC’s video game assets over the card game and TTRPG. He has also engaged more directly with creators and fans during his short tenure as D&D head. Only time will determine whether this approach will continue as he serves as WOTC president.
